The old News-Herald

Some of my co-workers who have been around for a while like to talk about the "old building" - the building up the hill from us that used to house The News-Herald offices - at 38879 Mentor Ave., Willoughby.

I know what the old building looks like because I drive past it every day. But I've never quite seen it looking like this:

"Aug or Sept 1976" is written on the back.

You can see "The News-Herald" nameplate over the front door, and I just love the old cars. Recognize any of them?

After the terrorist attacks on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, The News-Herald put together a special afternoon edition detailing what had happened, what was known so far and the reactions of officials in the region, across the country and around the world.
The cover from that special section:

The Sept. 12, 2001, front page looked similar, but included more information about what had happened and a better-quality photo (the coloring on the photo is funky because of the photo scanner I used):

A year later, The News-Herald did a special section look at people who had been affected by the terrorist attacks and where they were one year later:

Perry Nuclear Power Plant always prepared

Staff Writer Michael C. Butz wrote a story for Sunday's News-Herald about how the Perry Nuclear Power Plant has prepared for natural disasters - namely earthquakes. Perry Operations Manager Jeff Tufts and Donna Haviland, senior civil/structural engineer at the plant, explained that the plant has done plenty to prepare for the worst.

Butz's story noted that a 5.0-magnitude earthquake centered in Leroy Township occurred on Jan. 31, 1986, before the plant was online. Haviland said none of the plant systems were damaged.

Less than three months later, workers at the plant conducted a disaster drill to practice reaction to an event that would cause a disastrous amount of radiation to be released - even though the plant was not yet operational. Click the image below to read more about the drill from Staff Writer Bill Sammon:

In 1990, plant workers conducted another disaster drill - this one involving an earthquake. Click the image below to read more from Staff Writer Scott Suttell:

These clippings are just two examples of steps the power plant has taken to ensure safety of its workers and the community. Click here to read Butz's Sunday story to learn more about the plant's preparation for earthquakes.

Looking back: The Great Geauga County Fair

Ohio's oldest fair opens today for its 188th year and runs through Monday. The Great Geauga County Fair first took place in 1823. What was different about the fair back then? It took place in Chardon and lasted just one day. You can read more about the fair's history at geaugafair.com/geaugafair_history.html.

The fair now takes place annually during Labor Day weekend at the Geauga County Fairgrounds, which are located at 14373 North Cheshire St. in Burton.

Click here for information on hours and admission for this year's fair.

I took a look through The News-Herald's archives to look for some more recent history on the fair.

The Chicken Flying Contest is either one of the most popular events at the fair, or just one of the most photographable. In looking through clippings from the past 30 years, I found several stories and images from the contest. I liked this clipping with the color photos best. Click the image below to read the Aug. 30, 1985, story by Staff Writer Deborah Winston:

In 1987, a pair of 1,600-pound draft horses trampled two cars and injured three people when they were frightened by another horse-drawn cart. Click the image below to read the story by Staff Writer Emery P. Dalesio:

Intense thunderstorms ruined the first day of the fair in 1992. The circus and demolition derby were canceled, and rides were shut down. Click the image below to read the story from Staff Writer Cliff Pinckard:

In 1993, the fair added a natural resources area - which you can see in the lower left corner of the map of the fairgrounds. Click the image below to read more from Staff Writer Jeff Frischkorn:

Also in 1993, a member of the fair's board of directors for 12 years died just 10 days before the fair. Earlier in the year, the fair's public relations director of 40 years died. Click the image below to read more from Staff Writer Craig Webb:

In 1995, the official Geauga County flag was dedicated during a ceremony at the Great Geauga County Fair - exactly 16 years ago today. It was designed by Raymond Diedrich in 1953 when he was 15. Diedrich died of cancer in 1980. Click the image below to read more from Staff Writer John Horton:
