This day in area sports history: Sept. 7

1989: Matt Smith netted a hat trick to pace Mayfield in a 4-2 boys soccer victory over visiting Kirtland, and Carol Sulik recorded 25 spikes in West Geauga’s three-game volleyball win over Wickliffe.
